TUMBLER RIDGE, B.C. — Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School that left nine people dead and approximately 25 others injured, according to police.
Emergency alerts were issued Tuesday afternoon describing a suspect at large. Law enforcement responded to the school and located multiple victims inside the building. Police later confirmed that an individual believed to be the shooter was found deceased with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.
Officials have not released the suspect’s name. Investigators say they are working to determine what led to the tragedy.
“We are not in a place to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy,” said Chief Supt. Floyd of Canadian federal police, adding that authorities will continue to examine all aspects of the case.
Tumbler Ridge, a town of roughly 2,400 residents located about 1,100 kilometers north of Vancouver, remains in shock. Schools in the area will remain closed for the rest of the week as the community begins to grieve.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed condolences, calling the shootings “horrific” and offering prayers to the families and friends of the victims.
The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities are urging the public to rely on official updates as more verified information becomes available.
