Panther Football Player Parker Sutherland Passes Away, UNI Community Grieves

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of Northern Iowa community is deeply mourning the loss of Panther football student-athlete Parker Sutherland, who passed away on Saturday morning.

A proud native of Iowa City, Parker made his mark as a freshman tight end for the Panthers in 2025, appearing in four games. Before joining UNI, he was a standout athlete at Iowa City High School, earning second-team all-state honors in football while also excelling in basketball and baseball. Known for his determination, skill, and sportsmanship, Parker’s impact extended far beyond the field.

He is survived by his parents, Adam and Jill Sutherland, and his sister, Georgia. His family has requested privacy during this profoundly difficult time as they grieve.

“It is a heartbreaking day for our Panther Athletics family with the passing of Parker Sutherland,” said UNI Director of Athletics Megan Franklin. “He embraced every opportunity to play Panther football and represent the University. While we are devastated, we are blessed to have a Panther family to support the Sutherland family, our football team, and athletics staff as we navigate this loss together.”

UNI Head Coach Todd Stepsis added, “Parker embodied everything we look for in a Panther. His talent and potential were extraordinary, but what set him apart was his character, humility, toughness, and love for others. While our time with him was too short, we will celebrate the bright light he brought to our football program for the rest of our lives.”

The entire UNI community extends its deepest condolences to Parker’s family, friends, and teammates. Support services are available to students, faculty, and staff as the campus comes together to honor his life and memory.

If you want, I can also create a 230-word mourning version in a “heartfelt tribute” style that emphasizes his life, personality, and legacy rather than just the facts. It would read more like a tribute article. Do you want me to do that?
