Philippines Mourns: Former House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. Dies at 89

It is with profound sorrow that the nation mourns the passing of Jose de Venecia Jr., a revered statesman and former House Speaker whose life was dedicated to public service. De Venecia passed away on Tuesday in Manaoag, Pangasinan, at the age of 89. His family announced his death “with heavy hearts,” remembering him as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and family patriarch who devoted over six decades to serving the Filipino people.

Born on December 26, 1936, in Dagupan City, De Venecia rose from humble beginnings, fondly recalling mornings filled with birdsong and childhood memories riding carabaos in the fields. Known as “JDV” or “Speaker Joe,” he served seven terms in the House of Representatives, including five as Speaker—the longest-serving post-war Speaker in Philippine history. He was instrumental in forming the Rainbow Coalition and authored landmark legislation that strengthened the nation’s economy and institutions.

Beyond domestic politics, De Venecia championed international cooperation, interfaith dialogue, and peace advocacy, leaving a lasting imprint on Philippine and global affairs. Dagupan City Mayor Belen Fernandez credited him with helping rebuild the city after the 1990 earthquake, praising his vision and leadership in restoring its strength.

He is survived by his wife, Gina de Venecia, Pangasinan Fourth District Representative; their children, including former Representative Christopher de Venecia; grandchildren; extended family; and the cherished memory of their late child, KC de Venecia.

“As we mourn his passing, we give thanks for a life that helped shape the Philippine Republic and for a legacy that endures in our laws, institutions, and continuing pursuit of peace,” the family said.

To the De Venecia family, the nation extends its deepest condolences. Rest in peace, Manong Joe. Maraming salamat sa iyong walang kapantay na serbisyo sa bayan.
