WAVERLY — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred Saturday afternoon in Waverly.

According to a PCSO press release, the crash happened at approximately 2:57 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the intersection of Waverly Road and Hodge Street.

Investigators said a 2015 Toyota Highlander was traveling eastbound on Waverly Road when it began making a left turn onto Hodge Street. At the same time, a motorcycle driven by David Durham, 35, was traveling westbound on Waverly Road at what appears to be a speed above the posted 35 mph speed limit. Authorities said the Highlander crossed into Durham’s path, resulting in a collision.

Upon impact, Durham was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest along the north shoulder of Waverly Road, approximately 75 feet west of the point of impact. Investigators noted that Durham was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The Toyota Highlander rotated counterclockwise and was redirected approximately 15 to 20 feet northwest following the collision. All occupants of the Highlander were wearing seat belts.

First responders arrived to find Durham unresponsive, with a bystander performing CPR. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The driver and two passengers of the Highlander suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital, where they were treated and released the same day.
