NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The New Bedford community is mourning the loss of Ruby Quiro Santos, 23, who died following a multi-vehicle crash on January 30, 2026. Santos was pronounced dead at the hospital on January 31 after sustaining serious injuries.
According to Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn, Santos’ vehicle became disabled in the left lane of Route 18 North. Another motorist and two New Bedford police cruisers stopped to provide assistance. As Santos and another woman approached the stopped vehicles, a third vehicle struck both women before colliding with one of the other vehicles and a police cruiser.
The second woman involved in the crash was hospitalized in critical but stable condition. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Ruby Quiro Santos will be remembered by her family, friends, and community for her presence and the connections she shared with those around her. Her untimely passing is a devastating loss to all who knew and loved her.
