Suspect in Fatal Thornton Hit-and-Run Identified and Taken Into Custody; Medina Alert Canceled

THORNTON, Colo. — Thornton Police have confirmed that the suspect vehicle identified in the investigation of a fatal hit-and-run crash has been located and the driver is now in custody, according to an update released at 1:30 p.m. on February 8. Officials said the Medina Alert is in the process of being canceled, and additional information will be released as it becomes available. Police thanked the public for helping share information during the search.

The investigation began after a fatal hit-and-run crash shortly before 9:45 p.m. on February 7 near the intersection of Thornton Parkway and Huron Street.

According to preliminary findings, 14-year-old Jayden Benally was riding a small motorized bike northbound on Huron Street when he was struck from behind by a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. The driver continued northbound and did not stop.

Jayden was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Huron Street was closed for several hours as officers conducted an on-scene investigation.

During the search, investigators identified the suspect vehicle as a black BMW sedan with Colorado license plate FBWX60. Thornton Police partnered with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to issue a Medina Alert, which was supported by information obtained through license plate reader (LPR) technology.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic crash,” said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird. “We are committed to finding the person responsible and urge anyone with information to come forward. Technology like license plate readers helps us act quickly, but we still need the public’s help to bring this investigation to a safe conclusion.”

Thornton Police said the investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information related to the crash is asked to contact Thornton Police Department at 720-977-5150
