DULUTH, Minn. — Duluth Police have identified the victim in Tuesday’s fatal shooting on Piedmont Avenue as 33-year-old Darius Handy of Duluth. Authorities confirmed that Handy was found deceased from apparent gunshot wounds in the 400 block of Piedmont Avenue in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.
Police said the suspect and victim are believed to be known to each other, though no arrests or possible motive have been announced. Officials emphasized that there is no active threat to the public. Any connection between this incident and a separate shooting involving a St. Louis County Sheriff’s deputy later the same night remains under investigation.
Northern News Now reports that Handy had a recent arrest on January 22, 2026, at the St. Louis County Jail on suspicion of assault, stemming from a warrant issued after he failed to appear in court on January 12, 2026. That hearing was related to charges from December 17, 2025, involving an incident in December 2024 in which a person claimed Handy allegedly hit him with a vehicle over a dispute regarding unpaid power bills. Handy was scheduled for another court appearance related to this case on February 17, 2026.
In addition to these recent legal issues, Handy had prior criminal convictions in both Minnesota and Wisconsin, including felony domestic assault, threats of violence, assault, and violations of domestic abuse no-contact orders.
The Duluth Police Department continues to investigate the fatal shooting. Officers and first responders have secured the area, and authorities urge the public to avoid the scene while the investigation is ongoing.
