Victim Identified in Hancock Suspicious Shooting

HANCOCK, Vt.  — Authorities have identified the man found dead in a suspicious shooting over the weekend as Howard Doyle, 41, of Hancock.

Doyle was discovered inside a car on Bettis Road on Sunday morning after Vermont State Police responded to the scene. Police say they believe the shooting stemmed from a dispute involving individuals who knew one another. No arrests have been made, and authorities say there is no danger to the public at this time.

Family members described Doyle as a devoted father and beloved family member. His sister, Nicole Doyle, said, “He devoted his life to being a dad, family member. He was the person at all gatherings that people adored.”

According to relatives, Doyle had gone to the home of his son’s girlfriend on Sunday to help resolve an inter‑family dispute, but was tragically shot and killed. Nicole said her brother was a lifelong resident of Rochester and worked as a mechanic. “He was very close with his community, always lending a hand for vehicle maintenance, just doing friendly things for his neighbors,” she said. “It’s going to be a big loss for everybody.”

Investigators from the Vermont State Police and the Attorney General’s Office were on scene throughout the day collecting evidence and conducting interviews. An autopsy will determine the official cause and manner of death.

Family members say they want justice for their loved one as the investigation continues. Police have not released the name of a suspect or explained why no arrests have yet been made.
