EL PASO, Texas — Police have identified the man who was killed in a wrong-way crash Tuesday night on Interstate 10 West at Mesa as Jesus Chico Jr., 25.
According to the Special Traffic Investigations Unit, the crash occurred when Britney Torres was driving a 2017 Ford Mustang in the wrong direction on I-10 West and collided head-on with Chico’s 2009 Honda Civic.
Chico sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead as a result of the crash. Torres suffered minor injuries. Authorities have not released additional details regarding her condition.
The DWI Task Force has been called in to assist with the investigation, which remains ongoing.
This tragic incident marks the fifth traffic fatality in El Paso this year, matching the number of traffic deaths reported at the same point in 2025. Officials noted that three wrong-way crashes have been reported in the Borderland so far this week.
In response to ongoing concerns about impaired and wrong-way driving, El Paso city leaders held a press conference several weeks ago outlining efforts to combat drunk driving and improve roadway safety.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) El Paso District issued a statement addressing wrong-way driving prevention measures:
“Wrong Way Driver countermeasures are installed on off-ramps for freeways in the El Paso District in line with TxDOT standards that include signs and pavement markings.”
According to the TxDOT website, the agency continues to implement new engineering technologies aimed at preventing wrong-way crashes, including reflective pavement arrows, LED wrong-way flashing signs, and thermal sensors utilizing artificial intelligence.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and no additional information has been released at this time.
